Validate an idea before you build

Checklist · Checklists Free Checked: October 2026

Problem, market, money and a demand test, before you spend months on a product.

What it is

The checks, in order: customer conversations about past experience, alternatives and complaints about them, simple economics, an offer page before the product exists, and a "keep going" threshold written down in advance. Use it with the prompts "Customer interview script" and "Break down an idea with the Lean Canvas."

Checklist
PROBLEM
- [ ] The customer is described specifically: role, situation, where to find them
- [ ] You've talked with at least 10 potential customers about their past experience, not about your idea
- [ ] At least 5 of them had the problem in the last 3 months
- [ ] You know how they solve it today and what that costs them in time and money
- [ ] Their exact quotes are written down: they'll go into your offer

MARKET
- [ ] You found 3-5 alternatives, including "do nothing" and a spreadsheet in Excel
- [ ] You read reviews of the alternatives and wrote down the complaints that keep coming up
- [ ] You know which channel will get you your first 100 customers

MONEY
- [ ] You calculated how many customers a month it takes to cover your costs
- [ ] The price is tested in conversations: you said the number and watched the reaction
- [ ] You know roughly what it costs to win a customer in your chosen channel, or you've scheduled a test

DEMAND TEST
- [ ] You built an offer page before building the product
- [ ] You got real actions: inquiries, deposits, waitlist signups
- [ ] You wrote down the "keep going" threshold in advance: for example, [N] inquiries from [M] visits
- [ ] You compared the result to the threshold honestly, without bending it

DECISION
- [ ] You wrote down: continue / change the segment or offer / stop, and why
