First email to a potential client

Email · Emails and scripts Free Checked: October 2026

A cold email to someone who doesn't know you: a reason, one useful point, a real example and one simple next step.

What it is

An email of up to 150 words: a specific reason to write to this particular person, one thought about their problem, an example from your work and an offer of a 15-minute call. It ends with an easy way to say no, which makes a cold email less annoying. Fill in the reason and the example yourself: AI doesn't know them and will start making things up.

SUBJECT: [Reason for writing] — question about [recipient's task]

Hi [Name],

I'm writing because [specific reason: your job posting for ..., your post about ..., a mutual contact introduced us ...].

I [what you do, in one sentence] for [who]. Most people reach out to me when [typical client situation, in their words].

I suspect you may be dealing with the same thing: [one specific detail you noticed about them].

Recently I [real example: for whom, what was done, what changed, one or two sentences].

If this is relevant, would you be open to a 15-minute call? I'll show you where I'd start in your case, and you can decide whether it's worth continuing. Would [day and time] or [another option] work?

If it's not relevant, just reply "no" and I won't write again.

HOW TO REFINE THIS WITH AI
1. Paste the email into the chat and add: "This is a first email to someone who doesn't know me. Recipient: [job title, company, what I know about them]. Cut it to 120 words, remove generic phrases, and check that the reason and the example are specific. Don't add facts that aren't in the email."
2. Ask for 3 subject lines of up to 6 words, with no clickbait.
3. Before sending to a large list, check the commercial email rules that apply to you and your recipients. In the US, that includes the CAN-SPAM Act.
