Explain it like I'm new to it

Prompt · Prompts Free Checked: October 2026

Any topic or term in plain words: the gist, an analogy from your field, an example and common misconceptions.

What it is

The prompt asks the model not to simplify into something untrue, and it ends by checking your understanding: you explain it back in your own words and the model corrects you. The analogy comes from your own profession, so it sticks better. Works for terms from AI, finance, law and any new topic; for finance and law it explains the concept and isn't advice for your situation.

Explain [topic or term] to me as if I'm a smart person hearing about it for the first time.

Who I am: [my job or what I do]. What I know about the topic: [nothing / a few terms / I use it a little].
Why I need this: [for example: to decide whether my business needs it / to understand my colleagues / for a task ...].

How to explain:
1. First the gist in 2 to 3 sentences, with no jargon.
2. Then an analogy from my field: [my field].
3. A real-life example: what it looks like in practice.
4. If you can't avoid a term, explain it in parentheses the first time you use it.
5. At the end: 3 common misconceptions about it, and 3 questions I could ask next to understand it more deeply.

Rules: don't simplify to the point of being wrong. If something important gets lost in the simplification, say so. If you're not sure about a fact, flag it. No more than 300 words.

After your answer, ask me to explain it back in my own words, and correct me if I've got something wrong.
